If you spotted it as the Ginns area then you were correct for this is the proposed site of the town's latest supermarket. For ages now a large supermarket chain has been trying to get a foothold in Whitehaven and judging from this headline of April 20..2006 it would seem that the town will have yet another such store in the near future!!!!
That was an easy question but here's a harder one to keep you guessing while I enjoy my hols. The town's very first superstore took over a one time very important site. Where was it?

WILLIAM LOWE OPENED THE TOWN'S FIRST SUPERMARKET ON THE SITE NOW OCCUPIED BY TESCO IN 1992.

WHY WAS THE SITE ONCE A VERY IMPORTANT ONE MANY YEARS AGO?

WAY BACK IN THE A8TH CENTURY THE SITE WAS DOMINATED BY THE MANSION OF A LOCAL TOBACCO MERCHANT. IT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN AS GRAND AS THE YMCA BUILDING MUST HAVE BEEN IN IT'S HEY DAY.
WHEN THE MERCHANT WENT BROKE THE HOUSE WAS AUCTIONED ... REMAINED EMPTY FOR AGES AND THEN BECAME PART OF THE BROCKLEBANK SHIPBUILDING COMPANY'S COMPLEX.
IN MID 19TH CENTURY THE FAMOUS GRAND HOTEL APPEARED ON THE SAME SITE!!!!
BACK TO TODAY AND ASDA!!!!!
ALL THE HEADLINES..PLANS... HAVE COME TO NOTHING . THE NEWS REPORTED ON JAN.17 08.
