Of the lengthy list of Whitehaven named papers many came and went, some being
incorporated in to other larger editions, others just dying off. .The Cumberland Chronicle &
Whitehaven Public Advertiser and the Whitehaven Guardian for example lasted only a few year
whereas John Ware's paper ,the Cumberland Pacquet lasted for 140 years and has only recently
been overtaken for longevity by the later Whitehaven News which celebrated it's 150th birthday
in 2002.

The former was first established in King Street in October of 1774 and operated from
number 26 where later the Conservative club stood.(3rd building from the left ).Later ,the paper
operated from Haltons on Tangier Street and latterly from the Public Offices on Lowther Street.

The Public Offices stood where the GPO is today on Lowther Street.
The few copies of the Pacquet I have in my collection are all date
at which time it consisted of 8 large pages costing one penny. There were
precious few illustrations but a mass of information and adverts as can
be seen from these images of the front page.
.
Silent movies had not yet arrived so entertainment centred around the Theatre Royal
in Roper Street, the Royal Standard Music Hall on the Strand and the Oddfellows Hall
on Lowther Street.

Sadly,all three have now disppeared.
Buses and cars had not yet arrived but the alternative lay in the Whitehaven
Cab & General Posting Co.which, based on Tangier Street would apparently take you
or anything anywhere.
THAT'S ALL FOR NOW !!
